The Drive to Maintain Power A famous aristocrat who shifted into power in the great city of Florence during the war named Niccolo Machiavelli wrote a magnificent, celebrated work, called The Qualities of the Prince. Being a prince, led him to having the power of having control of every citizen within the nation. In the story, The Qualities of the Prince Machiavelli writes, “it is much safer to be feared than to be loved” (Machiavelli 222). When ruling a prince should be aware of what needs to be done in order to maintain his position. He has to learn to be cruel in order to maintain power. The event that changed the president’s mindset and changed many lives in the process was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 8 leading to President Roosevelt declared war on Japan. For instance way before the bombing of Pearl Harbor the U.S government was funding nuclear weapons built by special engineers. Japan continues fighting against the United States. President Truman knew he needed to show Japan terror and scared the Japanese so they would stop attacking the United States. He told them to surrender; they didn’t want to surrender to the allies. The president wanted to attack Japan by land, and air. Truman didn’t want to lose thousands of soldiers ' lives so he would rather prove his point, by fear to show Japan that they should have listened to him, and surrender when they had the chance. He was thinking of using the nuclear bomb that was built years before. Since Japan kept using violence forces against the U.S, Truman had enough and wanted to give Japan a warning to surrender. He introduces fear by letting them to surrender before they even bombed the United States dropped thousands of flyers as warning to the people about the atomic bomb. “ATTENTION JAPANESE PEOPLE. The methods that were used in the past people were tortured, killed and many government people didn’t care since they had disobeyed the law and had to pay the price for their actions. If a crime is committed the person has a deal with the laws. A ruler makes laws to have consequences to maintain his people in line and make sure they obey him. A 21st century example would be U.S government was hacked and hundreds of figures prints were stolen. According to the new article The Guardian, during the month of September 2014“Fingerprint images were stolen in one of the worst government data breaches is now believed to be 5.6 million, not 1.1 million as first thought, the Office of Personal Management”. Many consequences can occur from these fingerprints since we have spies all over the world. China can do hundreds of things with the fingerprints they can get into the United States system and hack important information. President Obama is using fear to figure out who hack the system. Fear of finding out who hack the systems was having huge consequences because the person has personal data. According to Business Insider, “applicant’s personal history, financial records, and everything important document was stolen”. The president of the united states has laws to make sure that people know that their actions have consequences. The consequences would be jailed, prison and ask who helped plan
