In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the novel takes place in the mid-1960’s, where the protagonist Lily is living with T-Ray, her emotionally and physically abusive father, and Rosaleen, an African American housekeeper who was seen as a mother figure, as she struggles with a guilty conscience about the death of her actual mother. Then fourteen years later, Lily still living with her abusive father, however after breaking out Rosaleen from jail, the same day she got placed under arrest, Lily decides to run away to Tiburon, South Carolina, a place where her deceased mother might have visited once in hopes to bring her closer to her mother. Although, life for Lily was always surrounded by the guilt she had about her mother's death, nonetheless, Lily was able find the Boatwright sisters and the Daughters of Mary where she learns about the power of the Black Mary, and through the Black Mary’s power Lily was able to enter an innercircle of women who love and care for her regardless of her race and background.The Black Mary power was something that one could physically see but through one's heart her power can fully shine, getting stronger with the person.
