For burying her brother, against the King’s wishes, Antigone has been sentenced to be thrown into a vault and left there. Ethos is trustworthiness, or reputation, which were qualities of Tieresias due to the fact that his story had been heard from all over. As a young man he did many stupid things and made wrong judgements. He came to the realization that he was blind even when he could see and made the decision to scratch out his own eyes. This built him and reputation and from years of helping people he became very trustworthy in the eyes of the people. “I have much to tell you: listen to the prophet, Creon.’ ‘I am not aware that I have ever failed to listen.’ ...‘Tearing each other, dying’ ‘In a whirlwind of wings clashing. And I was afraid.”(Scene V, pg 230+231). Creon, as stated, always listened to what he had to say because although he was old, it didn’t change the facts that he had a reputation for knowing things others didn’t. Tieresias uses ethos without even trying to use it because his reputation made him easier to trust and made his words easier to believe. When a wise man such as Tieresias comes to Creon, he realizes that he would be stupid to ignore him so he listens to what he he to say and is persuaded that something was wrong with the gods and it all lead back to what he did to Antigone. This was including Antigone’s brother who had died at war, but was marked as a traitor. Creon uses the persuasion of ethos due to the fact that he was King and people listened to him, therefor giving him a reputation that couldn’t be broken. “This is my command, and you can see the wisdom behind it. As long as I am King, no traitor is going to be honored with the loyal man.” (Scene 1, pg 197). He used ethos , all according to where he was on the power pyramid.
