The Merchant Of Venice Monologue

I first not this monologue when we were reading the play ‘Merchant of Venice’ but I only got gripped by this monologue when we watched the movie it really put the immensity of the monologue into perspective. I first noticed the actual gravity of the monologue forces you to give your full attention nothing less. I felt the actual power of the piece comes from how Shylock asks questions and then gives his answers to those questions with reasons of why he hates Antonio and what he has done to shylock. He actually answers one of the biggest questions in this play why would someone ever want a pound of human flesh it is just sickening thinking of it. The monologue gains power through the punctuation with all the stops such as commas, question marks it gives the audience a chance to process the actual meaning of what is being said and also gives an anticipation of what is going to be said next. Another thing that drew me was the emotion it wasn’t some simple emotion, it was a complex emotion that you don’t feel every day and that was revenge mixed with anger. This emotions gave the monologue the edge that it wasn’t just a normal monologue going through the motions it was a monologue with feelings that wouldn’t normally come to a normal person.

When I hear this I immediately thought of the poem IF and I was confused to how this related to drama. But actually when they say the magic ‘if’ it is a way of actors to getting into believing that they are this character in real life, the actors need to get comfortable in just being their character rather than acting it. This is where ‘if’ comes in, it is to make you think of what your character will do if they were in this scenario on stage right now or if they were let’s saying buying a Starbucks coffee.
