Charles Duhigg's The Power Of Habit

In the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he claims people can understand and change personal habits. Duhigg provides a description of the so-called habit loop composed of a cue, routine, and reward, pointing out the cues start habits and rewards signal the brain to remember routines. In fact, the author's purpose is to inform the reader about habit loops so they can see how habits work and thus remake them. With Duhigg’s insight about habits, students can stop the bad habit of procrastination, which is the habit of delaying assignments until the last minute. In particular, students should “recognize which craving is the driving behavior” of procrastination to (50). I, for example, procrastinate because I get distracted. Home has a host of distractions such as TV, my bed, computers, and family which I cannot resist. Whenever I am at home, my distraction is a cue, which makes me “go in automatic mode” and start procrastinating (19). Indeed, since my cue is discretion, I ought to pick something else. As for this, studying in the library will be my new cue instead of distraction. As an anecdote, at the school library I am not cued to distracted by rather start doing my homework. Although, habits seem like they cannot be remade, they can with “belief” as Duhigg suggested (86). Habits cannot be improved overnight, they take a long time and lots of persistence. Every time someone chooses not to attempt to perk up their personal habits, their chances of successfully changing them fall to zero. When I first tried to improve my studying habits I improved a small amounts. After a time, that small amount became a substantial amount. Eventually, assignments were turned in with high marks.
