Power Of Forgiveness

I believe in countless ideas and theories. But one thing I truly believe in the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not an easy concept to comprehend. It tends to be difficult for people to forgive. For example, forgiving someone for breaking your heart. Now I would love someone to explain to me how they forgave someone who broke their heart. That person would probably tell you the same things I am about to explain in this essay. To forgive someone for hurting you to the point your heart feels like it's ripped apart is not a walk in the park. Two years ago, me and my boyfriend, well ex-boyfriend now had a dreadful break up. We had been together for 2 years and a few months. The relationship had its up and downs like any relationship would; however, he …show more content…
However, that is not the case. It gives a person the power to control their life. Forgiveness helps to make you stronger because forgiving takes great courage to complete. Forgiveness is a complicated thought process. I watched a Tyler Perry movie called “ Diary Of a Mad Black Woman”. In the movie, a young black woman , married to a wealthy, and successful lawyer. They had what looked like everything you could ask for in a marriage. However, this was not the case. The woman’s husband started to have an affair and he did not feel ashamed of letting her know. She felt she could not speak up and say how she felt because they were married for 18 years and she loved him. He eventually threw her out their house and moved the woman he was having an affair with into the house. Few months go by and they get a divorce. The young woman meets a new guy and starts to fall for him instantly because he is everything she has ever wanted in a man. The ex-husband is in a court case one afternoon and his client is being sentenced to go to prison so the client decides to pull a gun from the arresting police holster and shots the ex-husband in the

Many people consider forgiveness as a virtue and something desirable. Nevertheless, people define it differently, probably depending on circumstances. As Jeffrie Murphy puts it, forgiveness is the forswearing of resentment- the resolute overcoming of the anger and hatred that are naturally directed toward a person who has done an unjustified and non-excused moral injury. According to this statement, forgiveness is directly related to moral obligation from individuals. It suggests that unjustified moral injury to a person may cause anger and hatred that can only be overcome through forgiveness.…

It would require a great deal of practice and patience, but I believe I could accomplish the state of mind and emotion referred to as "radical forgiveness". For many years I responded to situations as a victim, believing I wasn't good enough or blaming others for my choices. As an adult, I try to assume responsibility but old habits die hard and it is a struggle at times to push the victim away. When I consciously choose to not be a victim it is empowering.…

It is to be used as a tool to allow the victim to not feel helpless, but to gain control of his/her life. Forgiving someone or a group of people that perpetrated such a horrific crime, does not equal to forgetting the act. To the contrary, it is a reminder the victim has made the perpetrator to acknowledge the crime, and realize the pain he or she inflicted to the victim. The perpetrator can ask for forgiveness multiple times, but until the victim has reach the point where is ready to let go of the “poison” the anger has inflicted on him/her. Simon Wiesenthal, at the time Karl, the dying SS officer, asked him to forgive him for the crimes he committed to other Jews, was not able to grant such forgiveness.…

Moreover, when people forgive their offenders, it shows that justice has been served. Furthermore, when people do what is just, by forgiving their offenders, their view of the world will change. One of the reasons why forgiveness and justice go hand in hand is when an immoral person receives retributive justice, it causes people to repent on their wrongdoings thus making them a better person when they’re also forgiven by their victims. Take, for example, the older brother from “What We Plant We Will Eat”. At the beginning of the story, he was arrogant and kicked his younger brother out…

The idea of forgiving someone just because of their past as she states isn’t always the best way to go about doing things, doing so is almost like holding them non-accountable. Giving some form of forgiveness because of a person’s past does in the end though prove that the victim is morally a better person, and reduces the offender to a “hive of neuroses and ungovernable aberrations”. It’s hard to argue the fact that forgiveness is at times an essential part of life, but to say that it is necessary always is unfair. To improve on this essay, Callwood could have given more examples of people who failed to forgive their offenders, and explained why they had chosen to not forgive. In doing so, she would reach out to more readers and it would enable those who may have chose to not forgive someone to make a connection to the essay and be more interested in the piece.…
