Plessis adds that “Poe 's use of jarringly disparate nuances in “The Masque of the Red Death” suggests a concerted effort to breach the standards of aesthetics prevalent among the painters of this day.” (du Plessis). Du Plessis suggest that poe is attempting to overcome the normal in the way to overcome the power of nature which is the aim of Poe’s story of Prospero trying to cheat death and control power over nature. The narrator notices Prospero’s drive to stay alive by adding, “The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think. The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure.” (Poe, par 2). Prince Prospero knows that the red death is out there causing mayhem and killing hundreds of people, but Prospero’s ignorant personality and his strive to have power over death shows that if he locks himself up with all the essentials he needs to stay alive, he would be able to cheat death and ride the plague …show more content…
Knowing that he can not do anything to stop this intruder, he does what he can to try and escape it without death in his future. The narrator watches Prospero’s action as he is struggling to free himself and he says, “Prince Prospero, Maddening with rage and the shame of his own momentary cowardice , rushed hurriedly through the six chambers, while none followed him on account of a deadly terror that had seized upon all.”(Poe, par 13). Whilst the murmur shows himself at the masked party, Prospero is struck with straight fear. In attempt to free himself from the murmur, he runs away in hopes that the intruder will not kill him. In examining Prospero 's drive to be free from the murmur, Roth says,”Prince Prospero and a thousand knights and dames seek to secure themselves against the red death by relocating themselves in a “new” place, a place which can be effectively contained as inside space. The red death is described as an invader from the outside” (Roth). Roth stresses two points Prospero tries to cheat death and control his fate. Fate can not be controlled it does what it wants and will overpower man, letting the readers know that you can not defeat
