In the Power of Two video by Marilyn Friend (2005) introduces the six approaches of co-teaching as classroom practices. One approach is when one teacher teaches while the other teacher observes, this approach is more data driven. Meaning the teacher that is observing, they can watch the students and the instructional teacher as well. A goal of this approach may be for the observing teaching to provide professional criticism or they may have a different over view of the students and spot those that are not understanding the lesson. According to Cook (2004) this approach would be used in the classroom when co-teaching is new to the classroom or when there is a certain student the teachers want to make more detailed observations. If there is a student that is suspected to be struggling, this approach may be ideal to check up on the student and identify when the student loses attention or concept of the lesson. In the video, The Power of Two Vol. 2 it was noted that this approach may help with professional development or critique. The assisting teacher may go around helping students on a 1:1 bases while the other teacher instructs the entire class. If a student is not quite sure of what is going on, they have the availability to as the assisting teacher rather than stop the instructional teacher at that moment. (Friend, 2005) One of the biggest disadvantages of this approach is if done too often the assisting teacher may fall back as an assistant rather than a teacher. This approach is not one to be used as a daily approach, if done too often the teacher that walks around as an assist may start lacking in whole class instruction.
