Minimum Wage Should Be Poverty?

President Clinton once said “nobody who works full time with kids in the home should be in poverty”. Yet in 2012 the United States Labor of Bureau Statistics reported that there were 10.6 million working individuals who live below the official poverty line. Currently the United States government considers an individual to be poor if he makes less than 11,770 dollars per year, the actual number varies based on the number of individuals living in a household. Some politicians argued for increasing the federal minimum wage others were against it. Unfortunately nothing came out of these debates. As of today the United States Department of Labor reports that the federal minimum wage remains $7.25. Unchanged from seven years ago. This is unfortunate because increasing the minimum wage should be our priority. We should increase the minimum wage because it is fundamentally immoral for us to be paying such low wages to workers, also It will let minimum wage workers know that we appreciate them and stimulate them to work harder. Additionally there is no concrete evidence to support the popular belief that minimum wage laws force big businesses to fire workers and cut hours, also small business owners do not think that higher minimum wage will hurt their businesses. Furthermore increasing the federal minimum wage will reduce social inequality. This matter does not only affect those working a minimum wage job. It affects society as a whole. It is important to have a good balance of power, because when one institution becomes too powerful, it often tends to abuse that power. Most often those institutions are big corporations like …show more content…
But small business owners do not think that an increase in minimum wage will destroy their businesses. As we see in a national phone poll of small business owners conducted by the American Sustainable Business Council and by Business for a Fair Minimum Wage. The poll actually found out that sixty one percent of small business owners favor increasing the minimum wage from seven twenty five to ten ten. The poll also informed that fifty six percent of small business owners believe that increasing the minimum wage will benefit the economy. These finding contradict the notion that small businesses do not support a potential increase of the federal minimum wage. In fact, we understand that they believe the increase will help them, perhaps because stronger economy means more purchasing power for individuals, and more purchasing power means small businesses will be able to sell more of their products to

Hiring federal minimum wage is a very controversial debate among society, this topic has many pros and cons. Minimum wage is the base pay, meaning no employer should pay their employees less, however having a low minimum wage allows motivation for employees to strive for the hourly rate raise. I am against hiring minimum wage because while it can increase the income for household it requires employers to divide their pay evenly among their employees; this may cost the jobs of several of the other employees causing more families to go into poverty. Arguments for minimum wage often claim it to be an effective method to change poverty for the better. If businesses are required by the federal government to pay their employees more then their employees should earn more income and many of them can get out of poverty.…

Raising the Minimum Wage Will Not help the Poor? The debate over whether to raise the Minimum wage is one of the most controversial topics in America right now. The question at the center of this debate is will raising the minimum wage do more harm than good. Some, like David Henderson an economics professor at the Naval Postgraduate School, would argue that a raise in the minimum wage would do virtually nothing for the impoverished except make them more poor. He believes that employers would stop hiring and start cutting benefits, force employers to do something that they really don’t want to do, and finally cause teenagers to drop out of school in search of high paying jobs only to find that no one wants to hire them.…

Consider this logical hypothetical situation. The lowest paid employee at a company is making minimum wage at $8 per hour, the next higher employee on the scale is the shift manager making $10 per hour, the assistant manager at $15 per hour and the general manager earning $25 per hour. If the federal government raises the lowest paid minimum wage employee to $15 per hour.…
