The agriculture economy is no longer viable and there is a district lack of economic diversification. The stagnated economic environment in the Mississippi Delta is directly attributable to the history of slave-based plantation agriculture. Poverty does not target a particular race, but poverty population is dynamic and diverse. Most of the rich families who had mechanized agriculture in this area moved to the urban centers, abandoning their huge plantations. This resulted into unemployment in the region as the poor who were forced to remain in this region now have limited job opportunities. Johann Metz notes that there are still a few cotton plantations that still exist in this region but the agricultural sector, which was one of the main sources of income for most of the families in the Mississippi Delta, has significantly reduced over the last four decades. Poverty has serious negative consequences not only for the affected population but also for the country at large. The government and individual member of this nation should feel responsible in the fight against poverty. Poverty is often the cause of most of the social evils within the society. It disturbs communities by destroying the residents’ ability to support capital improvements, maintain an efficient education system, improve their health, and lessening environmental issues. Children from poor families do not get the opportunity to go through formal education because of a number of financially related challenges that they face. Most of them are often forced out of school to start providing for themselves at a very early stage. It means that by the time they become adults, they lack basic education that may enable them to be employed in formal institutions. As such, they are left with no option but to consider taking odd jobs for the rest of their lives. According to Richard Morrill and Ernest Wohlenberg drug abuse is one of the biggest concern for the government because it destroys many youths and has been the cause of death for some of the top celebrities. Poverty forces people to get engaged in drug trade. When presented with the opportunity to be drug peddlers, the poor will not hesitate to engage in the trade because they have no other reliable means of earning their income. Their target customers are always children from the rich or middle-income families who can afford to purchase these drugs. This is a clear demonstration that poverty affects every American
