In the pre-Cold War era (period between 15th century to 1945), the central aspects of security included conflicts and wars. The concept of the evolution of security can be traced back since the formation of the state system. The idea of security started in Europe in the 16th century. This period was well known as the medieval era. The political authority of the medieval era was scattered between the pope and the emperor. According to Robert Jackson and Georg Sorensen, religion (the pope) and political control (the emperor) administered power and political authority of the medieval state system.
The medieval state system was characterized by chaos because of the disordered system of leadership. War was not dominated by state system thus were fought between the rival groups, issues that resulted into such wars included aspects of rights and wrongs, to protect the faith, resolves dynastic inheritance conflicts, to collect debts and to discipline the law breakers. In the Cold war period security was achieved through the following; containment, deterrence, balance of power and arms control. Containment was the first security strategy that the USA used to win the Cold war. This strategy had many meanings and evolved till the end of the Cold War. Containment was a security strategy during the Cold War that the United States employed towards the Soviet Union in order to limit or prevent its expansionist tendencies in the global sphere. It was US policy to support other nations in order to secure democracy and strengthen the open market systems of economy around the world. During the Cold War period the American interests were to offset the threat of the Soviet expansion. And under the Truman Administration, the Soviets expansion into Europe after the 1945 was seen as a threat to international stability. Thus the Americans were uniquely able among the peoples of the world in securing their vital interests.
