I believe that the person at the end of “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, is not justified in their action because that is not the action they should have taken. This is because by doing this they are no different to Miss. Strangeworth. Also, they could have addressed the problem in a more civil manner, rather than doing what they did. Finally, they also will have to live with the fact that they did such a thing. The person is no different to Miss. Strangeworth because they did the exact same thing as her. They based their actions off of one boy’s word, as far as the reader knows, and acts upon that in a similar fashion. After hearing the gossip, they used a note to send Miss. Strangeworth a message saying “look out at what used …show more content…
Strangeworth wrote harsh letters, the character is doing the exact same thing. The character could have possibly gone to Miss. Strangeworth’s house and helped her. The character could have tried to work out why she felt the need to write these letters, and the character could have possibly gotten help, for her. It is said in the story that Miss. Strangeworth thinks that “the town where she lived had to be kept clean and sweet, but people everywhere were lustful and evil and degraded,” (Jackson, 253). Another possibility, if getting help did not work or was unnecessary, is to find an alternative instead of writing those letters. The character could have introduced Miss. Strangeworth to a new pastime, or taught her how to politely suggest something to someone in the form of her letters. This character now has to deal with the fact that the character ruined someone’s hard work, something that they truly cared about and took pride in. Every time they pass her house, see her face or even gets reminded of her they will remember what they did. Whether they take pride in their actions or not says something about them and their decision. If they do take pride in their decision they are the same, if not worse than Miss. Strangeworth and they did the action

In his article “Evil and Omnipotence,” J.L. Mackie explores the various adequate and fallacious solutions to the “problem of evil,” a problem in which “God is omnipotent; God is wholly good; and yet evil exists” (p. 119). While Mackie discusses, analyzes, and criticizes many solutions, including “good cannot exist without evil” (p. 120) and “evil is necessary as a means to good” (p. 122), my paper will solely focus on Mackie’s response to the fallacious solution that “evil is due to human free will” (p. 123), which begins “first I must query” on p. 124. This paper will formally extract, justify, critically evaluate, and engage with Mackie’s argument that existence of evil due to free will is erroneous. Mackie describes the free will…

To summarize, Cohen argues that when we treat someone as an object, our empathy has been turned off, even going as far as making the argument that every cruel act is committed when an individual “turns off” their empathy, whether it be naturally or temporarily.…
