In the eighteenth century the death penalty was established by King Hammurabi. Back then the death penalty was the only punishment for a crime. Today, society is torn between whether capital punishment is cruel and should not be used or that it is effective in today's world. In the article, Three Good Reasons for Supporting the Death Penalty states that in the Bible it is written ¨he who smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be put to death.¨ Having this written in the Bible proves that capital punishment isn’t a bad option, fore it is Gods’ word. However, people believe that killing someone is a sin, which it is but, many quotes from the Bible state that the death penalty is the punishment for doing this crime. Having the death penalty ¨would help/benefit families of victims¨ (Understanding Americans’ Support for the Death Penalty). Imagine losing a close family member due to a murder. What would your family want to have done about this situation? They would want to put him or her away just so that the killer can’t do this to any other family. PBS stated that ¨Some family members view the execution as an opportunity for closure.¨The article Ten Reasons To Oppose the Death Penalty Acknowledged the fact that ¨many people who oppose capital punishment have second thoughts whenever a particularly brutal murder occurs.¨ Like many human beings, we all have second thoughts or make different decisions. Say that someone in town is against the death penalty, but they soon find out that a friend was murdered brutally right down the street. They wouldn’t want the criminal to be let go, scot-free. They would want the murderer to get what’s coming to him or her. An eye for an eye.
