Many of us can agree that the world has become increasingly interconnected. We live in the technological age. Prior to this, we were in the Industrial Revolution, focusing on industries and factories. That was the first step to modernization. The second step of modernization would be the creation of advanced technology like computers, which we later installed social media apps into. Whether we like it or not, the world we live in is quickly becoming advanced and is constantly changing. The question that should be focused on is if the benefits of social media really outweigh the negative ones. Some people feel the need to beat other people down in order to make themselves feel better about their own lives. There are some people who literally make comments on pictures posted on instagram, facebook, twitter, basically anywhere, and they choose to make fun of them. The only reason they’re able to do this is because they can attack that individual from the other side of a computer screen or even a phone screen in the protection of their own room. They have access to the internet virtually anywhere they go. This makes it even easier to harass someone just out of boredom. The person being bullied online obviously is not going to have the power to block them because human beings have the tendency to want to know what other people think of them, and also they want to know if people are accepting of them. Everyone seeks approval in this society from any person they can get it from. Cyberbullying has become an increasingly present issue in today’s society. Cyberbullying can cause teens to fall into depression. This can even lead to something as horrific as suicide. For example, according to the Center for Disease Control, National Institute of Mental Health, the annual rate of teen suicide is around 4,600 people between the ages 10 and 24 who die from suicide. In the world we live in today money is the item that makes the world go round. People don’t control the world. Money does, and if that doesn’t reveal something important then nothing else does. Social media promotes a lot of businesses and provides them with the income that they need to become a thriving company in today’s modernized world. The technological age revolves around the more interconnected world that social media and the internet has created for itself. Social media is also said to keep people updated with the events around the world. Although all of the above things are true, do these things really outweigh the negatives? Social media is being literally abused by powers around the world. Tension between countries has grown, government secrets are being exposed, there are political scandals, people being hacked, horrific videos being streamed, an increase in teen suicides, and an increase in mental disorders amongst the general population. The big question would be is money really worth all of the negatives that come with it? How far is the world willing to go in order to make extra cash flow for themselves and their selfish wants? Finally, are the lives and humanity of our people worth it? Social media has made us throw ourselves into other people’s problems no matter how small or large they happen to
