It seems as if stereotypes have become apart of every level of our culture and do not appear to be going away. This severely hurts the perception of immigrants, as many American citizens associate them with false identities due to influential people like Donald Trump. In a recent speech announcing his candidacy for president, Trump described illegal immigrants in an irrational and inaccurate manner. “Bringing drugs, they 're bringing crime, they 're rapists,” This severely effects an immigrants image as a whole, as Trumps words have a trickle down effect. His words echo, as they are reiterated on just about every news station and website. This is exceptionally harmful to an illegal foreigner’s reputation. Despite the fact of an individual opposing Trumps stance, the words rapist, criminal and drugs become repeatedly mentioned along illegal immigrants. Yes, a fraction of illegal immigrants partake in gang organization, drug smuggling and violent crime but many of the others are hard working people. Understanding my ancestors could have been in the same position illegal aliens are in now, allows me to look at the issue from a different perspective. The majority of illegal aliens are not terrible people. An abundance of them fled their country with an idea of opportunity and a motive to live a better life. “While undocumented male immigrants are generally low-skilled, they also have the highest labor participation rates in the nation: Among men age 18 to 64 years, 94 percent of undocumented immigrants work or actively seek work, compared to 83 percent of native-born Americans, and 85 percent of immigrants with legal status.”(The Impact of Immigration and Immigration Reform on the Wages of American Workers, Shapiro, Vellucci) The prior statistic exemplifies the immigrants desire to better themselves. They also desire to better their children’s lives, just like my ancestors wanted for my own family. The United States foundation was built off immigration, and now that centuries have passed, does not mean it has become a different concept.
