Strange as it may seem, I have seen the positive impact of diversity and inclusion first hand in my life as a soccer player. Playing competitive soccer, my coaches have hailed from Romania, England, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. Vincent – St. Mary’s in Akron, Ohio and while it is true that a large percentage of the students have a Catholic background, the social, cultural and economic backgrounds are very diverse. In fact, for the past three years STVM has partnered with the government of China and hosts over 20 Chinese exchange students! STVM has taught me that different perspectives, ideas, and experiences make us all richer. I hope to continue this immersion in diversity as a one of over 60,000 students at the Ohio State University.
Finally, I have been raised to see diversity as a basic strength of our nation. I believe that the future of positive diversity within our country is at a cross roads as another presidential election approaches. While political candidates leverage the differences within society to create fear, I hope to use this same diversity to better myself, my friends, and the university.
