Sexuality In today’s society the biggest discussion we are having lately is all about sexuality. While sexuality can mean many different things one big thing we’ve talked about is same-sex marriage. Ever since same-sex marriage became legal it has been the biggest topic on the news and it has made history. Other topics of sexuality include should it be taught in school, so that students will know the consequences of having sex with their significant other. I chose this topic because I find it interesting how everyone has different opinions on this topic. Although, this is not the first time someone has ever tried to get married to the same-sex. According to an article on freedomtomarry.org, the first homosexual couple to try to marry was Richard Baker and James Michael McConnell; the name of this case was Baker v. Nelson. The couple went from their local supreme court to the supreme court of Minnesota. This case along with many other same-sex marriage cases caused a lot of controversy. Many homosexuals were beginning to form LGBT rights groups, such as, IGLHRC, ILGA, OII, and many others. Furthermore, many people are for same-sex marriage and here are some of the positive reasons why same-sex marriage is good for our society. According to our textbook, the family systems theory views the family as a whole, or system, compromised of interrelated parts and demarcated by boundaries. This theory relates to same-sex marriage because it could affect the children a lot. Having same-sex parents will bring up many questions, people will wonder how that child was brought into this world, whether the child came from a heterosexual relationship or was the child adopted. Although, having children does bring access to insurance and other government benefits. It affects the family as a whole because it will bring stress from the negativity society could bring upon the parents and the children. Next, sex education affects our families because it many parents find it hard to teach their children about sex, so they feel that our schools could teach them. Functional theory explains how it affects the society as a whole. Both topics affect the society as a whole because of many different reason. One reason same-sex marriage legalization affect society is because it gave gay and lesbians couples the same rights as heterosexual couples. Many people were unable to get government benefits because they were unable to get married and they weren’t able to have children.
