Preparing for this assignment required thoughtful preparation that resulted in an educational experience for myself the student. Listening intently to the Institute of Medicine released report 10/05/10 video (HTTP://iom.edu/reports/2010/the future of nursing-leading-change-advancing health.aspx) lead to excitement for me as a nurse. The Institute of Medicine report discussed the Future of Nursing: Leading change, Advancing Health. I was very surprised to learn that there were at least three million nurses in the healthcare workforce in 2010, imagine what those numbers might look like today. Hopefully nurses will consider this, will we see as a nation see a significant change in those three million nurses when the baby boomers retire. The Affordable

Will higher level of education and advanced degrees take nurses away from the bedside? (www.american nurse today.com blog/does-higher-education-lure- nurses) This site suggests that “ if a nurse has a BSN or MSN the nurse no longer wants to work at the bedside.” There is research that shows there are nurses that believe that with some higher degrees nurses no longer want to work at the bedside. The interest moves in the direction of management, administration or education. This notion I see as unfortunate. I see bedside nursing as a calling and an art. Bedside nursing requires a very knowledgeable nurse. Let’s face it nursing would be a real challenge if all the nurses were in leadership. Nursing is a Team effort to provide the highest of standards of care for the patient.
In conclusion The Institute of Medicine 2010 report changed my mindset as a nursing professional. I was already pursuing a BSN degree but I now see the need for the even higher advanced degree nurses, MSN as well as Doctorate of Nursing Practice. These higher degrees will have a direct effect on the face of health care as we know it. Definitely impactful information creating the need to pursue higher education. Nursing leaders are created not born. Not having the education to draw from certainly would be a deficit in a nurse as a
