After viewing The Poseidon Adventure (1972) it’s interesting to examine the film and it’s intertextuality. For example at the time of the film’s release it was hot off the heels of the decades first big disaster film hit Airport (1970). That film was a massive box office success and was nominated for many academy awards including best picture. Making another disaster movie after Airport makes perfect sense since both films were based off popular novels and boasted a massive star studded cast. Obviously this string of disaster movies were important to the film industry at the time, since they brought in audiences and were considered critical successes.
