In “Perils of Pornophobia” Nadine Strossen argues that pro censorship of all pornography is not the answer. Strossen describes a number of situations, where artistic paintings and photographs of woman’s nude bodies were removed from public viewing because of censorship. She states that pro-censorship feminists design their arguments on the premise that getting rid of pornography from society would reduce sexism and violence against women. She argues that Pornophobia would simply collide feminists in their battle for women’s liberation and rights. Strossen implies that many pornophobic feminists conclude that sex is degrading to women and that even consensual or nonviolent sex is evil and so women must be confined.…

Unfortunately, over that last five decades we have been introduced to the notion of, porn on demand. Starting in December of 1953, anyone over 18 could go out and buy “Playboy” magazine and within a blink of an eye be looking at naked women. Over the next five decades more and more magazines came out with photos more explicit then the last. During the 1960s the pornography film industry started taking off and by the 1970s was in full swing.…

The focus of body image over personality is causing a connection of people and objects. Kevin MacDonald writes “From an evolutionary psychology perspective, pornography feeds into and activates systems related to sexual gratification and, in some types of pornography, aggression; activation of these systems inhibits systems underlying affection and concern for partner’s well-being.”…

Gender and Sexuality from the Medieval to the 19th Century Throughout written history there have been a set of rules about typically anything one can fathom, from style of dress to the way one could worship, from who could own land to how a certain person could wear their hair. It is no surprise that these rules, enforced by society through social and judicial means, extended themselves into the subject of sexuality even if the terminology was different during the period. We get concepts of good and bad repeatedly throughout different times and different subjects simply to define what is acceptable, and unacceptable within a culture. Within the history of sexuality, from early medieval times to the late Victorian period (the 19th Century)…

Changes in the brain are similar to those that are observed in other addictions, including drugs and alcohol. Just as these foreign substances change the way the brain processes information and responds, so does pornography. It can affect users to the point that they are experiencing negative responses; this can be social, financial, or psychological, all of which are linked to addictions and the harm it causes. The realization that pornographic material is changing the brains is an important finding. It shows that this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed before it hits epidemic levels, as have occurred with other types of addictions.…

The idea proposed by Nadine Strossen in Why Censoring Pornography Would not Reduce Discrimination or Violence against Women is that “censoring pornography would do women more harm than good.” She states this because Strossen believes that the assumption that censorship of pornography would result in the reduction of violence and sexism against women must be in agreeance with the three following points directly from Strossen’s Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women’s Rights: (i) exposure to sexist, violent imagery leads to sexist, violent behavior, (ii) the effective suppression of pornography would reduce exposure to sexist, violent behavior, and (iii) censorship would effectively suppress pornography. However, there is no trustworthy evidence to justify these three points. Therefore, I agree with this statement and will argue against the censorship of pornography.…

The Oversexualization of Women in Modern Media There is a stark difference between being sexual and being sexualized. Men are permitted to be sexual, but are not oversexualized in media. Inversely, women are permitted to be sexualized in media, but are prohibited from being sexual. Having said that, the sexualization of women in media creates boundaries for women that men do not face, and impacts the cognitive development and mental health of women. The tendency to oversexualize women is a very “western” or “first world” occurrence (North America/Canada/Europe/Developed Countries), and is influenced by modernization and the availability of technology and media.…

Since it is easier to access, it also accounts for a lot of female objectification leading to the acceptance of sexual violence in our society. Sexual material, in this case porn, contributes to sexual violence today. “Exposure to pornography helps to sustain young people’s adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships. And, especially among boys and young men who are frequent consumers of pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of perpetrating assault. While children and young people are sexual beings and deserve age-appropriate materials on sex and sexuality, pornography is a poor, and indeed dangerous, sex educator” (The harms of pornography exposure among children and young people).…
