Eddie in the end realized how important it is for him to say in the life of the Bennett family, but also realized that he needed the Bennett family himself. Eddie realizes this stating, “He knew this family desperately needed him and he desperately needed them.” Billy on the other hand took a turn for the worse. Billy threatened his mother and attempted to kill her which ended up getting him sent to the doctors because of questions on his mental health. “You tried to kill me,” says Ms. Bennett as she cope’s with the fact that her son tried to end her life. Mrs. Bennetts ways of ignoring Billy’s bad behaviors just to give all that hateful attention to April led to Billy feeling like he can do what he pleases. Billy took advantage of this and went from threatening (like he did with April) to attempting to kill his mother, because he feels like there are no consequences for him. Now Billy wasn’t ignored because Mrs. Bennett realized that Billy is crazier than she thought. “Billy attacked me, he’s uncontrollable, and I’m so scared.” April in the novel ended up as insecure as usual giving Eddie the run-around because of a comment he made to April calling her “pretty” not realizing that he’s said that before. From all the fight and disputes to both of their own separate family problems it is hard to see how they stayed together as long as they did. Eddie was so desperate for love that he settled for April and April was so insecure that she settled for Eddie, but they both could have moved on to better. For their future they will separate because Eddie will eventually get tired of dealing with situations like April running off because of comments he made. Eddie might think he needs the Bennett family and April now, but he will move on because you can only apologize so much and since April is so sensitive Eddie apologizes quite a bit.
