In our lives, we build up many relationships with other people, family, friends, pets; the list can go on and on. Within those relationships, we have those friendships where we have traded friendship bracelets or even made pinky promises to stay friends forever. No matter what the value, those acts all embrace the same purpose- to uphold our relationship with them. Even when things get rough and end in a situation where we don’t want it be, the memories and bonds we had with that person will always remain with us forever. Since birth, Amir and Hassan were inseparable. They were fed by the same woman, lived in the same place and did everything together. Unfortunately, several incidents affected their relationship negatively which led to their …show more content…
Since the rape scene, Amir and Hassan were never again close. Hassan and Ali are left behind in their homeland while Amir and Baba migrate to America. Even though they end up being thousands of miles apart, Amir constantly thinks about Hassan. Several years later, Amir ends up going back to the Middle East to venture for Hassan`s son, Sohrab, and possibly gain justice. During his journey, he makes a stop at his past home and pomegranate tree. “It hasn`t borne fruit for years….I doubted it ever would again..Wilted and leafless...” (264). This resembles the physical and current state of the pomegranate tree but also Amir and Hassan`s relationship, old and long gone. The downfall of their relationship resulted in their separation leading to them not seeing and talking to one another, not making any more memories. This connects to why it has not borne fruit for years. Memories could never be made again since Hassan is gone forever. There are no more chances on going back because all of the opportunities are wasted. “I remember all the times we`d climb it, strandled its branches, leg swinging…the carving...” (264). This shows how the pomegranate tree was the place where all the unforgettable memories were made, where their friendship flourished and bear memories like how the tree grew and bear pomegranates. This also reveals how even though their relationship can not grow anymore, it will always be remembered and embraced. It continues to be marked on the tree and also their minds, hearts and

Introduction and Quote Isaac Singer once said “When you betray somebody else, you also betray yourself.” Isaac’s theory on betrayal, shows that betrayal is linked to guilt. By “betray[ing] yourself,” you are submerging yourself into the monster of guilt. When you betray someone, it might seem like a good idea in the moment, but overtime you betray yourself. The built up feelings become overwhelming and you end up punishing yourself even more than you punished the victim.…

The ending of “Pomegranate Seed,” allows the audience to be creative and think of what might have happened to Kenneth Ashby. After comprehending and analyzing the story, I strongly believe that Kenneth Ashby died not due to threats from letters but to join his dead lover, Elsie Cordie, despite the love he also presented to his present wife. I was able to reach this conclusion due to the author’s story title and how Kenneth Ashby still expresses his love for Elsie Cordie. The title “Pomegranate Seed,” is based on the greek story of Persephone being the half goddess of earth and the underworld because of Hades feeding her pomegranate seeds. This helps reach the conclusion of Kenneth Ashby being dead because it is assumed that Elsie desired…
