The Hippodrome was very political because the two teams in the races were split into teams that eventually lead to different political stances by them. It also was political because the big powers could use the people in the area to spread their voices and keep their command. Mark Cartwright, A ancient history encyclopedia historian writes that “The imperial use of public mockery as a political weapon and the huge crowd of the Hippodrome seemed made for each other - the two would be used in combination by many emperors” (Cartwright). He also said this, “The Blues and Greens, who dominated the 5th and 6th century CE, were particularly known for their violence and general hooliganism” (Cartwright). What the quotes explain are how the drome created a political powerhouse. The use of public mockery was used/abused by emperors to get the much-needed word spread. The emperor's used these areas to give speeches and keep the people supporting the political stances they aligned with. The people would be able to be there and enjoy the entertainment, but the leader could use it to their advantage to talk to their people. Emperors also went to the races to increase approval ratings. Political updates on sports networks are common, according to Sports Illustrated writer Richard Deitsch. He says, “Along these lines, the third rail for the U.S. sports media over the past 12 months has been the presidential election, and social media has been the arena where much of the discourse has been held” (Dietsch). The “Third Rail” is a quote to a certain topic (Healthcare, medication, race, etc…). This being said, the quote is being explained by the fact that sports media is being intertwined with politics. This can be “dark waters for a politician,” says Mr. Dietsch. The athletic figures are being used to gain popularity and for gaining momentum for the leaders’ words to be spread. It is a great way for leaders to communicate with their people, especially in the United States. In the U.S. alone, during a 24 hour period, there are about 134 hours of sports streaming through T.V.
