Political corruption has been a topic evaded by political scientists for an unsettling amount of time. It is not because of mere incompetence or lackadaisical demeanor, but it is because corruption itself has not been truly acknowledged for its importance or simply for the fact that there are other problems of higher priority than that of corruption. Another issue regarding corruption is that it takes countless forms and has not yet been given a definite definition. (Types of Corruption) It has been referred to in a way that corruption can be stated as a personal opinion in terms of what it is and the individual’s current moral standards. The Philippines is currently one of the most corrupt countries in the world and is said to be the most corrupt country in Asia. (Corrupt Asian Countries) “When most outsiders think of the Philippines today it is political instability, economic struggle, crime, and corruption that come to mind.” (Corruption in the Philippines) The country’s tourist slogan “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” gives off a sense of irony for the Philippines could definitely be described as the opposite due to its current struggles. Corruption is a result of a greedy heart and prideful attitude.
You do not see people of low socioeconomic status leading the revolt of corruption. It is those who are in authority, those with power and dominion, those gluttonous for the artificial riches of this world. Perhaps it could be the concoction of humanity and power itself that causes the corruption. That aside, it truly is a difficult problem. It hurts more than it benefits. It can lead to an increase in crime, overpriced product, monetary tension and also “tremendous distrust of public officials by citizens.” These all lead up to disorder in a country (Causes and Effects of Corruption). With an increase in crime, more unlawful acts are committed and corruption will only continue to recur. Crime is not being properly dealt with and it is almost close to subtly encouraging it. The Philippine Islands struggle with a vast amount of crime already and this chaos can only help but to spread dysfunction amongst the citizens. This results in anger and distrust amid the people and that can lead to many other problems.
Corruption affects the distribution of money. Currency is immorally being concentrated towards those of higher socioeconomic status and cannot be rightfully distributed to proper situations all because of an individual’s selfish desires. With immensely skewed finances, poverty in the country grows exceedingly.
