III. Refugee Crisis
For nearly four years, our television screens, newspapers and online sources have been presenting the Syrian conflict. Unfortunately, it took the picture of the body of a toddler washed up on a Turkish beach to gain attention on this growing humanitarian problem. This dangerous crisis has been going on for years because more than 11 million Syrians have been uprooted since the civil war began in their country in 2011 (Payne, 2015). These shocking statistics comprise of many vulnerable people who have been victims of rape and torture, unaccompanied children, and also those incapable of accessing the medical care they require (Payne, 2015). Yet, many politicians and the media have challenged the safety in bringing Syrian refugees after reportedly finding a Syrian passport near the body of one of the attackers in Paris. It is apparent that the tragic event in Paris has provided many western politicians and media sources the ammunition to further propagate Islamophobia by exploiting the attack.
IV. Calgary Police Terrorism Intervention Program
Calgary Police launched a terrorism intervention program in September 2015 that is designed at pulling youth away from radicalization. ReDirect is the name of the project and it targets young people who are vulnerable to radicalizing with Islamist terrorism and far-right extremism (Robertson, 2015).
