The narrator feels triumphant when the police arrive because he knows that they cannot find the ghastly corpse of his wife. Since he hid her body in the inner wall, there was no way to find that any killing occurred in the main character’s house. In “The Black Cat,” it said, “Even a search had been instituted—but of course nothing was to be discovered. I looked upon my future felicity as secured.” Based on this, the narrator knows even if the police do make a full investigation, they would not find the wife’s body regardless. Consequently, this causes the narrator to feel confident as the police search his house for the body.
