They react to different events and scenarios differently. In chapter 14, Huck and Jim are cruising along the river, and encounter a floating house. Jim and Huck had just made their escape and possessed minimal supplies. When they see the house they are interested to go inside. As they walk in Jim recognizes a dead man slumped over in the doorway. Jim immediately tells Huck to look away, and not look at the man. At the end of the book, readers learn that the man was Huck’s father. (Chapter 14) When Jim and Huck travel back to the island, Huck wants to have a conversation about the dead man. However, Jim refuses to talk about it, or engage in any conversation about it. Many times, siblings attempt to shield each other from anything that may hurt them. Huck would be very hurt if he knew that the man was his father, even though, Huck did not have a stable relationship with his father. This would hurt him because he knew there was the possibility of him becoming sober. Jim recognizes something that may hurt Huck and acts fast. One might wonder how to the course of the story would change without Jim’s protection. One may ponder if Huck would have gone back to the town. Without Huck, Jim would of never reached freedom, and most likely, would've been caught by a slave catcher. Huck would've failed to make it away form his down, he probably, would of been killed by an obstacle in the river, or would of been caught due to his lying. This relationship can be compared to a brother ship, that develops through Twain’s novel. This can be seen from their conversations, concern for each other, and their fun-loving spirit. Huck and Jim’s relationship can be a reminder to society, that, even the most unlikely bonds, can grow to be so strong, and that everyone has a story, or a goal.
