1. What’s the difference between a symbol and an allegory?
Though a symbol is used when creating an allegory, they are not the same. An allegory is a narrative in which it uses symbols to create a hidden meaning beyond the literal text, while a symbol is anything or anyone that is used to represent something beyond what it is on a literal level. Another difference is that allegories stand for only one thing while a symbol can represent a number of things, with a lot of different meanings.

Biblical stories are also commonly used in works of literature because they offer advice and morals which writers want to put out in their pieces in a more of a distinct way. Most writers are extremely gifted when alluding to the bible, and in many ways, it’s easy for both Christians and non-Christians. These writers use objects found in scripture to allude to the bible such as gardens, serpents, plagues, floods, loaves and fishes, betrayal, denial, 40 days, slavery and escape, milk and honey, and by doing this they are able to create a biblical allusion in their own …show more content…

1. What is Foster suggesting about “myth”?
Foster is suggesting that while most people suppose that a myth means “untrue” and not “deeply held religious beliefs” (Foster 59) as others might believe, they’re both wrong in some sort. Foster is suggesting that a myth is “the shaping and sustaining power of a story and symbol” (foster 59), or what makes the story what it is in the way of the readers eyes. There are three types of myths that define our culture and the people that we are, therefore Foster sums up the definition of myth by saying “myth is a body of story that matters”.
2. What is meant, generally, by “speaking of myth”?
Generally, when “speaking of myth”, we are making an explanation about ourselves that we know are true, but can’t be proven by know science, genetics, and even physics. As humans, we want to explain ourselves in every which way from where we come from to why we’re here, but as many people say, some things are just meant to be a mystery, and even though this might be true, we will still explain ourselves using myths. In history, myths can be found all over the place from biblical mythology to ancient Greece mythology, and while some myths have facts about them, none of them can ultimately be proven due to the fact of not enough evidence, and yet that’s why we have
