In the certain river areas that Hughes talks about in his poem, it is talking about certain events, that took place there. When Hughes talks about the Congo, I believe that he is talking about the acts that took place in Africa, by the start of a trade of slaves, diamonds, and other goods. In my opinion, this writing can be used for personal reading or for a oral performance. The writing is personal and is from only voice. The dictation can be characterized as formal and emotional, because the writer seems excited about what he is witnessing. I believe that the genre that this work belongs to is history and it communicates ideas.
