The Poem Dreams Analysis

The poem “Dreams” is symbolic of the ideas of an African American woman who wants to eradicate the inequalities and unrighteous indignations visited upon people of color. The poem's literary word choice is dependent upon the word “revolution." The first part of the poem shares the author's concept of the insurgency that would fundamentally impact social, systematic, and institutionalized racial oppression and hatred in America. “I used to dream militant dreams of taking over america to show these white folks how it should be done.” She dreams of doing this whilst impressing the world with her “perceptive powers of stopping riots and bringing about peace."

Consequently, she comes to the realization that revolution is not only to occur in society,

The internalization of myths is a universal truth for all cultures, especially American culture in modernity. Both Coates and Brant combat the myth of The Dream and also myths of internalized hierarchies of race and status. In Between the World and Me, Coates’s idea of the dream is a lie of innocence that feeds the ignorance that most Americans have towards the injustices constantly occurring around them. He described his wife as being woken from the dream due to her “knowledge of cosmic injustices” that she experiences due to identity as a black woman. (Coates p. 65)…

In his work, Coates employs the phrase “the Dream” to encompass the stereotypical, ignorant, “white” view of America. His choice of the word “Dream” to characterize this view is quite interesting and ironic. The general connotation of the word dream is something perfect and fantasy-like, something someone wishes for, but not reality. So the use of “the Dream” is satirical in two ways.…

As Canadians, we value many things; one being our land. It is clear how much we cherish this from the line in our anthem, “God keep our land glorious and free”. Therefore, artists like Archibald Lampman and Marjorie Pickthall have written about our beautiful land. Both Pickthall poems “Dream River” and “The Pool” as well as Lampman’s “Morning on the Lièvres” do a wonderful job of describing nature. They constantly refer to gemstones or metals to describe nature’s aspects, thus giving the reader a strong visual aspect to base themselves on.…

In 1977, following the mainstream success of their 1976 self-titled album, Fleetwood Mac began recording the legendary, Grammy winning Rumors album. Fleetwood Mac recorded the album at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles in the midst of relationship turmoil and the peak of the band’s drug abuse. Bassist John McVie and keyboardist Christine McVie divorced after six years of marriage, drummer Mick Fleetwood separated from his wife after she had an affair with his best friend, but the most drama and arguably best songs came from the end of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks’s volatile relationship. Buckingham and Nicks’s breakup resulted in iconic and tragic songs like “Gold Dust Woman”, “Go Your Own Way”, and the group’s only number one single, “Dreams”. (Keens 1) Nicks wrote “Dreams” during the Rumors sessions during a brief escape from the hostile recording environment after hearing “Go Your Own Way”.…

A wise man once said, “motion equals emotion.” All words and phrases, regardless of whether they are spoken or written, are characterized by their motion: their meter, their rhythm. The motion created by words has the ability to bring individuals to an emotional place. In Langston Hughes’ “Dream Variations,” motion is at the core of one’s understanding of the poem itself. Throughout the poem, the speaker talks of his experience with racism as a black individual.…

Before discussing the topic of freedom, we must ask ourselves: Are we really free? From early decades, the concept of freedom goes hand in hand with reaching success. Many Americans work restlessly to transform their dreams into realities. However, the evident disappointment and the lack of progress allude to the fact that, in the end, it all depends on the opportunities one is given. Langston Hughes makes this concept one of the main themes behind his literary works, especially in the poems Let America Be America Again and Dreams Deferred.…

The poems also act as a symbol of art in the American region and all over the world. These poems are not only an escape from African-American identity, but they also demonstrate the demand for African Americans to be set free. Being of color leaves the African Americans at the disposal of the white people, who are not fond of the idea of Africans sharing the same privileges with them? Americans believe that the act of the blacks invading their country and settling down is enough and so getting more freedom will be like a blow on their eyes (Huston,…

Every dream begins with a dreamer. A dream is something we all have and look forward to coming true one day in our lives. Most people set goals to help accomplish their dreams, because sometimes you just can not go to sleep and dream about something, and then expect it to come into existence; however you can go to sleep and dream about something and start to make plans and set goals to help that dream come true. Langston Hughes, “Dreams” and “Harlem” both share a similar meaning; even though in Dreams Hughes talks about what life would be like if you forget about your dream, and in Harlem Hughes talks about happens when a dream is deferred. The two poems help the reader to understand that dreams has no physical restrictions, however they are important to help provide necessities for life.…

The title and the rhetorical question at the beginning of the piece show that African American dreams of freedom are suppressed by white people. The first line, “What happens to a dream deferred”, is a rhetorical question that states that white people do not understand what it is like to have freedom taken away and challenges their ideas of what life is like as an African American (1). The dream that is deferred is the American Dream. In the first stanza, the speaker says that black people do not have access to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness because of the discrimination at the time.…

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
