The author appeals to our sense of pathos when describing the aftermath of Winchell’s radio broadcast. Previous to the broadcast, Charles A. Lindbergh received the Republican presidential nomination in 1940, frightening the Jewish members of the community due to his friendship with Adolf Hitler. However, as soon as the broadcast has finished, the town is fired up. As midnight hit, “sleep was out of the question for kids [that were] overcome by their parents’ excitement” (Roth 19). Excitement surges across the town because “what had begun for us as a cheerful little evening stroll ended as an impromptu block party for everyone [on Summit Avenue]” (Roth 19). Furthermore, Roth utilizes imagery as the reader is able to create a mental image of the block, with “beach chairs [being dragged] and unfolded,” so men, women, and children are able to enjoy the cool fresh air.
