Essay on The Platinum Card From American Express

Graham Ober, responsible for helping to manage NerdWallet’s internal knowledge and tools including its smartphone app, knows credit cards well and applied for the The Platinum Card® from American Express in 2013. Since then, he has associated the card with enjoying top-notch airport lounges and the help he received planning a Christmas vacation to the Caribbean.

He was enticed to apply for the card by an unusually generous temporary sign-up bonus. “That was the thing that pushed me over the edge to get it,” he said.

However, the $450 annual fee has him constantly re-evaluating whether the card is right for him.

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers a rather mundane 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar spent on anything, redeemable for such things as travel and merchandise. It also has a signup bonus: Earn 40,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Terms Apply.

But the value of the card lies less in its spending rewards and more in its built-in perks. They include a $200 credit annually toward the cost of travel incidentals, such as baggage fees and inflight food purchases. The card offers Hilton HHonors Gold status, American Express Centurion and Priority Pass Select access to airport lounges and reimbursement for airport speedy-line programs TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.
