A new trend for the 1950’s was idolizing pink flamingos. The claims of boldness consisted of rich families vacationing in Florida and the distinct color of the flamingo. American’s were in desperate search of something new, but the author questions the reasons behind the pink flamingo’s popularity when he/she inquires about why the birds were called pink flamingos, why American’s were intrigued by the flashy color, and why flamingos were such a popular trend. It showed boldness and that Americans were thriving and revived after the depression. It is ironic that American’s made flamingo’s extinct in the 1800’s but did not seem to notice their color then. It is probably because American’s from that time period were more concerned about food and survival rather than flashy colors. A flamingo’s color gave them boldness, but they were popular for other reasons as well such as wealth and pizzazz.
Why were flamingos such a popular trend? The trend started by families bringing back flamingo souvenirs from vacationing in Florida, which represented wealth. If a family was going to Florida to vacation in the 1930’s they were most likely well off, or severely in debt. Either way, it looked appealing to the public. After the simple trend of souvenirs started, hotels that symboled Flamingo’s started to go up, which brought lots of publicity. The flamingo’s had a legacy of leisure and extravagance, and who doesn’t like that?
