In Eve’s family, she has a goth rocker brother named Larry, a dad, a future ex-stepmom named Tracee, and a Boston terrier named Risky. The world has been hooked on the idea of emigration ever since the astronauts leaked a video of Venus; a party planet for the souls, full of animals and people living as friends and what Whittier described as, “ The planet was a Garden of Eden” (389). Almost everyone on Earth were onboard for killing themselves, but those who were not, the Emigration Assistance Squads forced them to. “Out of Eden” is the first episode which starts off the Guns, Germs, and Steel documentary. This episode kicks off in a country called Papua New Guinea due to the major impact that it had toward Jared Diamond’s findings. In New Guinea, Jared Diamond became inspired to understand why some societies are not as advanced as others. This question has never really entered my mind until I watched this documentary and learned more about Jared’s well thought out theories. In the book “East of Eden”, author John Steinbeck includes many biblical allusions, one of which being the story of Cain and Abel, portrayed by Charles and Adam in the first generation, and Cal and Aron as Adam’s children in the second generation. The allusions of original sin and overcoming it by choice not only relate to how biblical characters can be represented in real life but also depict the nature of humanity on the basis of psychoanalysis: are humans naturally good, bad, or it is a matter of choice? In the first generation, Cain is represented by Charles, Adam’s half-brother, who was always jealous that Cyrus loved Adam more than him. The climax happened when Cyrus, the father of both, favoured Adam’s pup, which was picked up in a…

The literary form and genre of the book of Genesis is prose: biblical and historical narrative. Biblical narratives in Genesis show that “God is active in His world” and these narratives typically “chose certain events to reveal God.” For instance, this element is apparent when the Angel of the Lord speaks to Hagar, granting her the promise of descendants (Gen 16:10). In the same manner, this element is reinforced in subsequent chapters (Gen 17:19; 18:10). In describing this book, it is significant to note that most of the characters in the narrative are flawed.…

Today, the book Everyone Leaves is the published novel of Nieve’s Diary. “And the Earth Did Not Devour Him” by Tomas Rivera is the story of a young boy who lives his life as a Chicano migrant field worker along with his family. The book is not a straight narrative but is divided into several short scenes in the span of a year. From the many scenes in the book, one of them stood out to me and the relation to the theme of this course. The first scene, Rivera called it “The Children Couldn’t Wait,” he argued that the farm owners were often very cruel. Even when days were soaring with high temperatures, the family was not allowed to stop for water breaks.…

Destroyers is a futuristic novel about how the burden of disease cripples a village in Kenya and the impact foreign investors have on the socioeconomic values of that village. The title chosen by McKay sets the tone for the book: in the end money and profit has the power to destroy all that we know. McKay was able to challenge many of my views by using subjugated knowledge that compelled me to learn more about the global health issues our western world is typically not aware of. In turn it encouraged me to understand the responsibilities…

East of Eden is a novel written by acclaimed author, John Steinbeck. The story follows two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, and their intertwined lives in the years between the American Civil War in the 1860s and the Great Depression in the 1930s. Throughout the novel, the author recurrently uses religion through a series of biblical allusions that in turn reflect the context of the novel. In order to explore how context has informed the use of religion in Steinbeck’s East of Eden, one must examine the setting, plot, character depictions and stylistic features. By extensively exploring the context of Steinbeck’s work and its inadvertent impact on the use of religion, I have been encouraged to question the meaning generated by the language used, thereafter allowing me to address its ambiguity.…
