Leadership Styles In Healthcare

A problem within healthcare management that I have identified is the lack of training for effective leadership within the healthcare organization. Effective leadership within organizations has had its ups and downs throughout the years. There have been many different attempts to teach individuals to be leaders without abundant success. Leaders need to address the multiple issues and challenges that present as well as devise solutions in order to effectively lead their personnel and prepare them to lead should the issue present itself.

An effective successful leader must possess many qualities. They must be able to cope

with a multitude of changes and align their personnel to achieve changes set forth. Leaders also

From departmental heads such

as primary care and human resource departments, to ancillary services and work center

supervisors. If there is someone who works directly for you, then you are a leader. With the

many leadership positions within a healthcare organization, you can expect to see many different

types of leadership that go with it.

Three common leadership styles seen within healthcare organizations are the Laissez

faire, Autocratic and Participative leadership styles. The laissez faire leadership style is basically the “your on your own style” and minimizes direction and the face time of the leader. This

particular style is only as good as its people. Autocratic leadership is more of an authoritarian

type of leadership and is experienced by many with in the healthcare field. This type of

leadership is generally used by personnel using their force of personality. Although this

particular type of leadership seems overbearing, it can be useful in times of chaos, such as a code

or within the emergency room. Participative leadership is exactly what it sounds like. Leaders

Personnel must be prepared for situations as these by

obtaining the necessary training and skills need to perform as the leader should the situation arise.

According to an article from the National Center for Healthcare Leadership, “High turnover and

an inadequate leadership pipeline stem in large part from the systematic failure of healthcare

organizations to provide these leaders and those with the capabilities to replace them with the

support needed to develop professionally and perform their jobs effectively (2010)”. Without

nurturing and training future leaders, healthcare organizations will be faced with a succession of

under trained leadership personnel who do not possess the skill sets to guide individuals who are

requiring leadership.

Existing healthcare organizations need to implement a structured program that focuses on the retainment of quality leadership personnel as well as potential leadership personnel in order to prepare for instances of leadership loss such as retirement, relocation and promotion.

Programs that develop future leaders only increase the savings in finances and employee
