A world without literature is an illiterate world. Literature is an art and the word itself is “derived from the Latin litteratura meaning "writing formed with letters," literature most commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and in some instances, song” (Lombardi, Esther). “World literature as we know it today would not exist without the nourishment of oral traditions” (Puchner, Martin). Oral traditions are stories of which were not written down; instead they were stories that were told orally- either by spoken word or by performances. A couple of examples of oral traditions that are world known today are Homer’s Iliad and Walt Disney’s Snow White.…

In the States, Oppenheimer and his constituents are drafting the first of many blueprints of a bomb that will eventually force the Japanese out of World War II. “Genres have the power to help or hurt human interactions, to ease communication or to deceive, to enable someone to speak or to discourage someone from saying something different” (Kerry Dirk). The word “genre” has a prototypical definition of “category”, one needs to analyze the definition on a deeper level to understand that “genre” means more than just “category”. It is to an extent a “[tool] to help people to get things done”, as described in the article “Navigating Genres” by Kerry Dirk. The literal definition of genre is a category of artistic compositions, in literature, characterized by similarities in form, content or context, but what makes one genre unique from another is its writing elements such as rhetorical devices, targeted…

My favorite genre of reading is nonfiction. I love nonfiction because I learn about history and I still get to enjoy it. For example, in Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, I am learning about Mt. Everest and have a personal account of a true story about the mountain along with it. This makes nonfiction so likeable because you get more educated and have a wonderful time reading it. So far in Into Thin Air, I have learned that the the elevation of Mt. Everest is 29,028 feet.…

The genre that I have chosen for my freewrite is reflection. The purpose of reflection is to look back on events in a lifetime, or specific period, and remember why those events were important. A reflection can be purely personal where the writer simply wants to write how they feel about something. However, a reflection can also be assigned to a student such as the class evaluations are at the end of each semester, and while a class evaluation is mainly a review it also has a it of reflection in it. The research in this genre is all from memories and experiences.…

Literacy Narrative I did a lot of writing while I was in the tenth grade. The English teacher I had at the time was the best when it came down to writing. I did not have too much interest in writing at the time but Mrs. Perez changed that, she gave me a new perception on writing and how it can change society. Mrs. Perez would always recommend really good books, one of which was a book called “His Dark Materials”. This story is about a young girl and her allies, fight for the discover of a dark substance called the “Dust”.…

To Lemony Snicket, I have just finished reading the first book of your ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, even though it was my second time reading it. Throughout the book, I appreciated the definitions of the words along the way, which helped to understand the book. I also admire the excellent description used throughout the series, which really made me visualize the story, and paint a picture in my head. The plot was fast flowing, not dwelling on a certain feature for a long time, which made the book interesting the entire way through.…

Section A: One of the primary conflicts in Blade Runner is trying to identify real humans versus “replicants” (this is a challenge both for characters in the film and the film’s viewers). Without an identifier or test to determine who is human, how do we determine what makes a human “human”? Or what makes someone inhuman” (a monster)? How do you think Viktor Frankenstein would answer these questions? When we think of replicants, in movies or in books, we make them in our image.…
