Another way this excerpt from the Pistis Sophia can be interpreted is that Peter hates Mary’s sex, as in women. Peter is known for being hostile toward Mary. In the Pistis Sophia Peter gets particularly upset when the women answer Jesus’ questions before the men get a chance to answer, “My Lord, let the women cease to question, in order that we may also question.”(Pistis Sophia 318) Peter is known for his dislike of women, so it could also be possible that the “sex” Mary is talking about is actually gender.
