You cannot co-exist with a second entity threatening to take over in a spur of the moment rage without learning a few tricks. When total separation isn’t enough to protect the world from the Hulk, Bruce has adapted a few techniques to counterbalance his hidden anger. Most of his earlier years, before the surface of the Other Guy, Bruce devoted his entire existence in avoiding the “monster” raging beneath his skin. In his father’s words, the monster was in him, in them both, burdened to never escape from it. And to never embody or embrace his father’s image, Banner dedicated himself to a single promise: never become what his father was. Do not accept his legacy, his rage. His battle for control a war he could not win. Slowly realizing in his journey of self-acceptance that he’d never rid himself of the Hulk, Bruce eventually learned that the concept of control didn’t exist. That the only way to restrain the Hulk was to restrain himself. Under the tutelage of a martial arts expert for years, he learned a number of meditative breathing techniques, including Aikido, as a defense mechanism against the Hulk.
