In 264 B.C., Rome decided to intervene in a dispute on the western coast of the island of Sicily. Which was a Carthaginian province at the time. While Carthage supported Syracuse, Rome supported Messina, and the struggle soon exploded into an all out war between the two powers, with control of Sicily a major trade route, at stake. Over the span of almost twenty years, Rome rebuilt its entire fleet in order to confront Carthage’s powerful navy. Scoring its very first sea victory in 260B.C. at Mylae. Though Rome's invasion of North Africa that same year ended in defeat, Rome was too stubborn to to simply give up. Then in 244 B.C. the Roman navy was able to win an extremely important victory that had broke Carthage's legendary naval superiority. At the end of the first Punic War, Sicily became Rome's very first overseas province. In the second Punic War, the legendary Carthaginian Hannibal leads an army of men and elephants over the Alps mountains to invade Rome for revenge. He scored a colossal victorie at Lake Trasimene and Cannae, with his incredible military knowledge and skill. Then hannibal's army was almost spent, Witch lead to his defeat in 202 B.C. by the hand of Rome’s general Scipio Africanus.
