The Pill: A Short Story

“Yeah, but I already know how to do it. It’s common sense, really. Plus, I learned how to make a pill in science class. You pour the yellow mixture into the pan with the tablet-sized holes in it. Bake it for a while until it gets hard. Then, you let them cool. When they are done cooling, drop a little poison over them. That’s all there is to it,” Faith smiled.
“Not even,” Quinn smirked. “You have to make the poison so the Elders can’t feel any pain. Now that is hard.”
“Okay. Then teach me.” She saw a video camera in the corner of the room. She checked to see if it had any battery. When she found that it was fully charged, Faith placed it on the swivel chair. She rolled it over to the front of the room so it was facing the table. She turned

“All finished!”
“Nicely done,” Faith commented. “Thanks for showing me how to do it.”
“Anytime.” Quinn began to clean up the table. Faith shut off the video camera.
“What’s that for?” Quinn asked.

Faith’s eyes grew to the size of oranges. “Are you serious? Yes, I’m okay with that! This is the best job ever!” she exclaimed.
“Glad you like it, Faith,” Quinn nodded. “Come on. I wanna show you my

Quinn opened a door that was right next to Faith’s. His lab was almost identical to Faith’s, except for the desk at the corner. Under the desk was a refrigerator. Quinn walked in and sat at his desk. He reached under it to open the refrigerator. He grabbed an apple.
“Do you want anything?” Quinn asked Faith.
“No thanks,” she answered, still standing in the doorway.
“You know, you can come in if you’d like,” Quinn said, taking a bite of his apple.
“You’re allowed to have food? I mean, the deliverers don’t give you the food?” Faith asked, sitting in a chair.
“Yeah. When you’re this important to the Community, you have a lot of privileges.” Quinn told her.
“Lucky,” Faith sighed.
“You know, you have these privileges too,” Quinn said, taking another
