The Pilgrim's Progress

Allegories are always very thought-provoking to read. The book, The Pilgrim’s Progress is a very long, descriptive, and fascinating allegory that was written in 1678 by John Bunyan. It takes the Christian walk, and demonstrates it by having the main Character, Christian, travel a pathway, called the King’s Highway, to the Celestial City, which is Heaven. All of the places and Characters along the way have names that have significant meanings to how they play into the story. I can compare myself, and can identify myself with three characters from the book, The Pilgrim’s Progress: Talkative, Ignorance, and Temporary.
First, I can compare myself, and can identify myself with Talkative. Talkative loved to discourse about spiritual things. In fact, he knew so much about the Christian beliefs, that he could answer almost any question one thought to throw at him. All that he could do to look good on the outside, he did. Anyone in company with him who didn’t know him well would have believed that he was a wonderful, noble, and honest man. Yet, he would say things, and his works would not align with his words. When he spoke of, for example, the grace of Christ working in the

Ignorance always made sure that he kept up with his good works. Somewhat like the Pharisee in the parable of the Pharisee and the publican, he prayed, fasted, payed tithes in everything, and had not left his country for the pathway to heaven. He thought his works gave him righteousness, and he gained a self-sufficient mindset. He believed that he was justified for his works-sake. That Christ would see his works, and would justify him for them. Yet Ignorance never felt the enormity of his sin, and his great need of Christ’s righteousness. He thought often of the great wonders of God’s Kingdom, and Christ’s justification, and all the holy things of God, but never saw that his works were not enough not gain

Pilgrim’s Progress is an old book that still relates to modern day times, and has interest to the modern day reader. Pilgrim's Progress relates to modern day times because many people still face the Christian journey. All of the bad people and distractions Christian meets are still some of the setbacks Christians everywhere face. For example Christian meets Mr. Atheist on the trail, and he tries to tell him that there is no God or afterlife, but only the life here and now and the people that are in it are the only ones that…

The Ever Wandering Constraint “Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 6:9 NKJV) in this text from the Bible wandering is constrained to a negative meaning but, in John Milton’s Paradise Lost, constraint is found and broken throughout the poem. Milton uses constraint as a major thematic element throughout his poem. In this essay we will be examining the characters of Adam and Eve with their personal constraints and as they related to each other, Satan’s contempt of constraint and constant trying to be rid of constraint, and as well as illustrating the lack of constraint upon the poem itself in the way it is written and the way the word wander changes without constraint throughout the poem.…

Mother Teresa once said, “A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, must empty ourselves. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace.” Mother Teresa is epitome of selflessness. As a nun working in the slums of Calcutta, she possessed true humbleness and embraced humility in her work. She is an excellent model of how one should live out The Beatitudes.…

The Journey of a Changed Heart Enlightenment generally comes in increments and rarely with the flash of the proverbial light bulb switching on. Scripture portrays truth as coming “line upon line, here a little, there a little” (The Holy Bible). Within Antonio Machado’s poem “Last Night As I Was Sleeping,” the reader travels through one person’s journey of religious awakening through the use of metaphor, diction, and symbolism. The poem describes baptism, conversion from wickedness to righteousness, recognition of the Spirit and finally understanding God’s love.…
