Throughout Christian’s journey in The Pilgrim’s Progress, he encounters countless dilemmas which often distract him from the path to the Celestial City. However, whenever an individual accompanies him or aids him, he prevails and acquires ever-increasing wisdom. If this individual constantly escorts Christian on his journey, it will be less probable for Christian to stumble or lose his way. John Bunyan should incorporate the character “Paraclete” into his allegory, The Pilgrim’s Progress, considering he will offer help in times of trouble, he will stimulate encouragement for Christian to overcome obstacles, and he will grant Christian someone to converse and journey with.

For instance, when the protagonist is stranded in the Slough of Dispond and Pliable abandons him, Paraclete encourage Christian and aid him. Alternatively, if Paraclete is with him, Christian may never even fall into the slough to begin with. An alternative obstacle Christian faces in the allegory is the Valley of the Shadow of Death which is described as “A Wilderness, a Land of desarts, and of Pits, a Land of drought, and of the shadow of death, a Land that no man (but a Christian) passeth through, and where no man dwelt” (Bunyan, 62). At this point in his journey, Christian has difficulty perceiving and almost plummets into a deep ditch to his right and a quagg on the left. If Paraclete is there with Christian throughout this arduous part of his journey, he can encourage Christian to be brave and prevail. The protagonist also wrestles against Difficulty hill. And to make matters worse, he loses his scroll he obtained at the Place of Deliverance. When Christian is sleeping, he misplaces his scroll and is then unaware when he awakes and continues up the perilous hill. If Paraclete is there when this happens, he will be able to help Christian out by informing him about his parchment and reserve a trip back down and up Difficulty. Throughout the allegory, Christian has an improved journey when his friends accompany him. For example, when Christian affiliates Faithful and they exchange stories about their opposing experiences, they appreciate each other’s fellowship and share their struggles with each other. They also are together when they approach the ancient town named Vanity. They collectively struggle and support each other as they progress through the fair. While Faithful is a great companion and friend, he dies in Vanity as a martyr. But if Christian has a comrade throughout the entirety of his pilgrimage, he will constantly have someone to share his struggles and trials with. If Paraclete journeys with Christian, he can also keep Christian from accepting poor company such as Worldly-wise and Pliable. Since his family refused to join Christian, his aid will become his new family until they reach the Celestial City.
