Vocab Summary The story begins in the first person view of John Conlan who is speaking about his school and his reputation. He expressed his dislike for school and spoke of one of his avocations being setting off bombs in the bathroom, which earned him the nickname of “Bathroom Bomber”. John often showed his proficiency in lying and the girl he met, named Lorraine Jensen, thought that he lied so much because of his parents. They met on the school bus, but their personalities were completely different. Lorraine found herself mortified while she picked up a book she dropped between her seat and her window, but John is the type of person to laugh for no apparent reason and he did while he was sitting adjacent to Lorraine that day.

One day, John, Lorraine, and a couple of friends named Norton and Dennis, began prank calling people by looking at random number in a directory and seeing who could talk to the stranger on the phone for the largest amount of time. They used either Norton’s or Dennis’s phone, but they couldn’t use John’s or Lorraine’s because of their parents. John thinks that his parents are quite mundane and he doesn’t get along with his father and Lorraine’s mother is very strict about the people she is around and her being around boys. They called this a “Telephone Marathon” and this is how they first met Mr. Pignati. Lorraine picked out Mr. Pignati’s number and began speaking with him. She posed as a charity worker, saying that she is collecting donations for the “L&J Fund” which means the Lorraine and John fund. The conversation lasted for quite a long time because Mr. Pignati is very lonely and wanted someone to talk to. The conversation ended with John and Lorraine coming to Mr. Pignati’s house to collect ten …show more content…
Pignati is very lonely, but very hospitable and kind. They also found out that Mr. Pignati’s wife died although Mr. Pignati said she went to visit her sister in California. This was clearly a prevarication because Lorraine and John found a funeral contract for Mr. Pignati’s wife. John and Lorraine end up becoming good friends with Mr. Pignati, despite him not knowing the true identity of Lorraine and John, nevertheless they visited his home and more frequently. They visited the zoo, where they entered the nocturnal room and saw some other animals, and they also visited some department stores which really helped them bond together. Mr. Pignati had been kind enough to buy John and Lorraine whatever they wanted in the store, but John and Lorraine didn’t take advantage of his kindness and they didn’t act as ingrates toward Mr. Pignati’s hospitality. Then one day, John and Lorraine found themselves in a predicament when they were roller skating around in Mr. Pignati’s home. Mr. Pignati got a heart attack after chasing John up the stairs while wearing roller skates. The feeling of anxiety washed over John and Lorraine as they worried whether Mr. Pignati would survive or not. The ambulance took him to the hospital and the doctors said he was going to be okay. That night, at Mr. Pignati’s home, the feeling of anxiety went away and a feeling of love sparking between John and Lorraine replaced
