Throughout history society is confronted with conflict people may face extreme adversity, individuals may attempt to look past their misfortune and help the victim of circumstance. In the short film “The Pigeon” directed by Anthony Green suggests that during misfortunate events, individuals may rise above adversity through their bravery and morality to support the helpless victim of circumstance. In “The Pigeon” Green’s character is helpless due to the unfair treatment of his people and when he loses his passport his safety is at risk, however a woman nearby helps him through his adversity by risking her life to save his. In the film Schindler's List directed by Steven Spielberg the main character Oskar Schindler a vain business man becomes an unlikely humanitarian as he employs Jewish people for his factory as an attempt to save innocent lives. In the beginning Schindler has a business venture in Krakow to manufacture enamelware. Schindler decides for pragmatic reasons to hire Jewish refugees living in the Krakow ghetto. Suddenly the SS starts to exterminate the Jews living in the ghetto; his reaction to the mass murders was to employ and protect his workers so the German soldiers would not eliminate them. Doing so he is preventing the brutal mistreatment and execution Jewish people however, Schindler is unaware of his humanitarian acts. His awareness grows as a Jewish girl begs Schindler to hire her parents because she has heard that his factory is a haven. At first he wants nothing to do with saving Jewish lives, only to exploit them for cheap labour, yet he uses his gold watch to use as a bribe to bring the family to his factory. With his act of kindness towards the Perlman's Schindler begins to participate actively in saving Jews. Over time he realizes that to save his employees from certain death he must sacrifice his life and fortune to protect them.
