The Picture of Dorian Gray, written by Oscar Wilde surrounds the vicious repetitive actions performed by Dorian Gray himself. Some might consider Dorian Gray as a murder, and that he is the reason for the death and/or suicide of any person who is affiliated with him. Throughout the novel, it is clear to see that all relationships connected with Dorian Gray end brutally and fatally. The first victim of Dorian’s vicious mind games was also his first truelove, Sibyl Vane, who ended her life with a senseless suicide. Another example of his deviousness is the committed murder he performs on his dearest friend, Alan Campbell, who just risked his reputation with the assist of the disposal of all evidence, from Dorian’s previous murder. Despite having all these tragic cases, other still might argue that it is just a turn of unfortunate events, and that in fact, Dorian is still as guiltless as he once was during the beginning of the novel. As the drastic changes of Dorian’s personality become more visible during the story, it becomes in a way a distraction from one of the main influences on Dorian’s new personality – Lord Henry. The impacts caused by this devious man, combined with the fear of the painting, completely change Dorian from an innocent boy, to a heartless and emotionless man.
1st = The first murderous act that Dorian Gray performs is on his first true love, Sibyl Vane. Even though Dorian Gray does not personally kill her, he drives Sibyl so off the edge that she is left to only commit suicide. It all began with Dorian’s bipolar moods, where he tore Sibyl away from her admiration for acting, her family and herself as a whole. His first approach to win over Sibyl was after seeing one of her amazing acting performances at the theatre.
