What is a Periodic Table and what is it used for in science and our everyday lives? On entering the chemistry laboratory at Mercer University, for Science 100 a large colorful chart displaying rows and columns of cells, was hanging over the chalkboard. I immediately felt a bit intimidated and my heart began racing. I questioned myself as to what am I about to experience? Moving closer to examine the chart, I felt as if the bright colors on the chart were generating warmth (energy) and that chart was an exhibit of the Periodic Table.

For years, different people ventured to group elements by their chemical traits. However, Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907) a Russian chemist is first to devise a periodic table of elements.

In the average household the table is used sub-consciously in daily activities. It is used in cooking or preparing meals. One of the basic ingredients used in the preparation of meals is salt. In is versatile because it adds flavor to the meal and is also used as a preservative. Salt is produced by a neutralization reaction between an acid and a base. The formula for salt is (Na) sodium from the alkaline metal group+ (CI) Chlorine from the halogen family, written as NaCI. On the other hand, the scientist uses a combination of the elements to formulate new compounds. For one thing, hospitals administer saline water or solution to patients. This helps to maintain tissue balance and also in the treatment of dehydration. Similarly, it can be used as a disinfectant, or for lab work. This is a combination of salt with water NaCI+H2O. The table contains the elements that are used to create saline water. Additionally, water is used in the household as well as many aspects of science. Water is indispensable, it is a solvent, transporter, and is essential for life. It has three different state; liquid, solid, and gas. Water helps sustain the body and assist in the varying functions of the body. Water is a multi-facet commodity and its many uses include drinking, cooking, laundry, as well as hygienic purposes. In the science lab water is the base of solutions and is crucial in the creation of new liquid solutions. Each molecule of water is made up of 2 Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atoms
