Hofstra Grad Case Study

Across the NWSL, teams are struggling to adjust to Leah Galton, the English rookie who started the season late but since then has scored three goals and notched three assists, reinvigorating a struggling Sky Blue attack. The Hofstra grad is the second English player to be drafted into the NWSL from the college ranks and the combination of an English pedigree with the fitness and strength that comes with an NCAA athlete has proved lethal this yearfor both Galton and Rachel Daly, the St. John’s product drafted by the Houston Dash.

Both players are from Harrogate, a tourist destination north of Leeds. In Harrogate, Galton’s love for the game started early as a shared passion between a young girl and her father.

“I work on something new every week. I know that especially in this league, you play one game and the whole league knows how you play, there’s video and people speaking to people. I go game by game, see how they’re positioned, see what their strengths and weaknesses are and attack their weaknesses and play to our strengths,” Galton said. “If it’s me getting double teamed, there’s someone open, there’s always something to play around it. So we just need to be quick out of the gate and figure out a way around it.”

It worked last Saturday against the Washington Spirit, where she dribbled through several defenders before scoring the only goal of the game. With the win, Sky Blue FC jumped to fourth-place and a playoff position. Galton has extra incentive to make the playoffs, since her father has promised to fly to Houston if Sky Blue makes the championship game.
