Lance Armstrong once said, “If we don 't somehow stem the tide of childhood obesity, we 're going to have a huge problem.”, definitely, the society will suffer tremendously if obesity is stopped. Many children and adolescents are currently suffering due to obesity. Some of them are aware of being fat and try to lose weight on the most convenient way. However, some of them are not aware and do not want to provide healthy attention to what is happening to their health. Obesity has been a massive issue from different countries, specifically the United States of America. It has caused children and adolescents to be at risk to experience depression, low self-esteem and eating disorders. Depression is a period where a person suffers from too much sadness. In fact, there are so many reasons why depression takes a toll on an individual’s mental state. Some of those reasons may be physical or emotional. Obesity has been considered vulgar and contraindicative to attractiveness (Carr & Friedman, 2005). Individuals who suffer from obesity look unattractive and in this time are effected by low self-esteem. In addition, individual’s self-esteem become low because when a person is obese they don’t have the body that is accepted to the public. Overweight girls are more likely to feel bad about their bodies. These feelings place them at a greater risk of having low self-esteem, depression, and problems with anxiety. (Frisco, Michelle L.) Being obese will not give a person the ideal body features and this is one of the reasons why self-esteem is decreasing.
