Yoga And Meditation

When we started this project, we were asked to think about something that has been on our minds recently. One of the things I wrote down was “It’s a struggle to stay zen.” Out of everything I wrote, I felt that this was what most totally encompassed everything I was dealing with. I realized that the way I understood zen, yoga and meditation was a lot different than how most people around here understand it. Being raised by a Buddhist mother, these ideologies are, whether consciously or not, ingrained into how I think. I realized later on that these ideas are just not a part of where I live. Certain aspects that we do see are often misrepresenting these philosophies. They’re turned into something that has more to do with appearance and fitness …show more content…
In other words, meditating regularly and keeping my depression and anxiety from getting in the way of my life in the face of stressors. As I started thinking more about my meditation and yoga practices, I realized that most people in western society aren’t very familiar with what yoga and meditation actually are, and that sometimes it gets a little lost in translation. I hope to show how people take advantage of these things and treat them as trends not even realizing that they are scientifically backed and historically non religious yet spiritual paths towards total health. I want people to try to understand what these ideas actually are, if not just because they’re so drastically different than most ideologies around here. There are so many myths and misconceptions about these ideas, which I think is why they’re still so uncommon after existing for so …show more content…
I wanted to play with the irony of capitalist advertising of anti-materialist ideas, which I see a lot of.I hoped to achieve this by integrating advertisements and other layered sound clips to created a sort of muddled feeling to the recording, like one might feel in their minds when they’re anxious. It’s very different than how a meditation should actually feel. When you’re actually in a meditative state, everything should feel totally silent and peaceful . In my performance, I come home from school ready to relax. I decide to listen to a guided meditation, and it seems to have a robotic, Siri-like voice. The actual meditation is constantly interrupted by ads for yoga workout tapes that promise abs and a yoga booty, a request for a microtransaction in order to continue the meditation, and separated, dissonant voices. The majority of yoga in the United States is nothing like yoga as it’s practiced in the east. Yoga is not supposed to be a work out, or to make you look differently. Traditionally, yoga is the movement of the body in order to stay present. It’s akin to meditation and is more for mental or spiritual health than physical fitness, although that is a part of it. Even so.it’s more about health overall than just physical fitness. By the end of the performance I can never manage to meditate and I try to express feeling even more

So the truth of the matter is: Meditation can be hard to do. And that’s totally okay. I know it can seem really intimidating when somebody else seems to be great at meditation, and you sit there and your mind just bounces all over the place. It feels like what you’re supposed to be doing is think about nothing, but every moment you have a new thought, and every time you have a thought it ends up ultimately with the general sensation of “shit!…

There were many moments in the Guided Meditation where I was connected with Jesus. One, moment is in the story when I first got comfortable and relaxed I felt that Jesus was right next to me ready to pray with me. The second time is when the prayer started and I was placed into the story. I saw Jesus right next to the Pharisees and everyone around him. The third time was when the paralyzed man was being lowered into the room I saw Jesus face looking up and then down at the man to heal him.…

I have an extremely busy schedule and find myself stressed out thinking about the objectives I set for myself. For this reason, I have strategically set aside certain times where I will meditate in order to alleviate that stress and filter it into refreshing my body and my brain. Since the beginning of the class I have made it a goal of mind to learn how to become more mindful.…

I chose yoga because I can honestly say I have never heard any negative feedback about it. I know people who do it or have done it, and they have nothing but good things to say. I also like the fact that it not only benefits to my state of mind, but also my physical body.…

During Buddhism's 2,500 year history, several thriving sects have emerged, each with a unique take on the teachings of Buddha and daily practice. Insight meditation retreats have been known to positively affect the lives of many who choose to participate, Buddhist or not, due to the increase in general awareness. The term ‘insight mediation’ otherwise known as ‘Vipassana’ means ‘seeing clearly or deeply’ when translated, ‘It was rediscovered by Gotama Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills’ (dhamma.org, 2012) This form of meditation focuses on self observation in an attempt to reach a balanced mind. This is taught as part of an intense ten-day residential course, open to anyone that is interested and willing to participate in the proclaimed, difficult but engaging activity. The mind must first reach a level of calm in order to effectively observe the self, this is then followed by an awareness of one’s breathing and other bodily sensations.…

At approximately 5 o’clock p.m. we left the small confines of the Syracuse University campus to travel a mere fifteen minutes away to the Zen Center of Syracuse. The purpose of our trip was to surround ourselves and ultimately be practicing Buddhists for three hours. On the car ride over, we discussed each of our expectations for the upcoming journey. One student expressed his hopes of, as he said, “Zenning out” and learning how to manage his stress. Similar to the rest of us, another student wasn’t sure what to expect.…
