Throughout the course of this class, we have learned about numerous individuals and topics, which have had an immense influence on molding western civilization. It has been built upon the achievements of history’s greatest leaders, ideas and documents. The most important, however, was that of Greek mythology, the philosophies of Socrates, and Augustine’s, Confessions. From the beginning of the belief in higher powers, to the philosophical advances and growth of religion, it is inevitable that these topics have been able to provide pathways to the structure of modern society.
1a. Greek Mythology Historical Significance
Greek Mythology began millions of years ago by civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia. The people believed in higher powers, who could ultimately guide them to lives of success and wealth. They were provided with answers to questions that ultimately could not be answered by the science of that time. To this day, mythology is celebrated to be a major influence in the growth of religion, and humans. It has been shown in many famous artworks including, The Birth of Venus by Bouguereau and The Cyclops by Redon, both depicting the stories that have been passed down through generations. Not only is it an important historical document, acknowledging the people and culture of the time, but also it serves as being significant in developing Christian beliefs. The Christian religion we know today is most closely related to that of what Augustine practiced. If it were not for Confessions, the Christian church would not be the same today.
